12-26-11 The Goldengate Restoration Project secures the Corner House.
247 West Goldengate is an excellent example of what has happened to the neighborhood to the East of it. Neighbors say the house has been vacant for years as the bank tries to recoup its investment. Meanwhile, scrappers have broken in to take anything of value.
That starts with the copper plumbing. The Corner House is a duplex and had both kitchen sinks, a bathroom sink and a bathtub removed. However, there is still another bath sink, commode and tub that are still relatively intact and best of all, the electrical system and duct work haven’t been pulled up yet.
The Goldengate Restoration Project went to work immediately and put up the side door that had been kicked in, boarded up the kitchen window before it is broken and pad locked the front door.
In this way, Occupy Detroit is protecting the city from decay caused by rampant foreclosures until it can get on its feet again. Learn more about what we’re doing at www.OccupyDetroit.US and like the Goldengate Restoration Project on Facebook.

when I 1st saw this …
when I 1st saw this, I thought — cool, they’re doing something besides sleeping outside. They’re claiming property, which, if cared for, could eventually begin to revitalize a neighborhood.
But you’re right. Once the bldgs are fixed, the banks will come & pick them back up, all market-friendly & value-enhanced at no cost to them. Now I just see this as a trap. The banks playing on American apathy. It’s a well-intentioned plan, but counter-effective.

@PaulineRisteau let’s be fair. I didn’t see him complaining about trashed bldgs….that’s you projecting your values onto him.
And he does make a valid point: this action effectively maintains property values for the banks. It’s clearly constructive criticism, not just a random attack. Which is more beneficial: looking for flaws in the plan, or defending a flawed plan?
Consider other actions. Effective ones. Don’t settle. Don’t feed the bank just to “do something”. Talk it out.

@MrDetroit You complain when buildings are allowed to become trashed burnt out shells beyond repair and you complain when someone puts any effort into saving the buildings from becoming trashed burnt out shells beyond repair ? Why? What would youprefer ,that they do nothing ? What are you doing to help?

LikeDislike@MrDetroit07 We do …
@MrDetroit07 We do that too. See our videos on Kyra Williams and the Henry family. In fact, our first direct action prevented a foreclosure on day one. This action is intended to prevent the decay that follows a foreclosure. Open, vacant building invite drugs and prostitution and no one wants that.
If you are serious about keeping families in their homes, join us January 2nd as we stand with the Henry family again to force their bank to adjust their mortgage and let them stay.
